American scientists Harvey Alter and Charles Rice, and also British virologist Michael Houghton, were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine this year for the discovery of hepatitis C virus and research in this area, Kazpravda.kz refers to Ria.ru reporting.
"For the first time in history, the Hepatitis C virus can now be cured. The 2020 Medicine Laureates’ discoveries revealed the cause of the remaining cases of chronic hepatitis and made possible blood tests and new medicines that have saved millions of lives," the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institute said in a press release.
Nobel Week, as always, starts in Stockholm with the announcement of laureates in the field of physiology or medicine. The names of the Nobelists in physics will be announced tomorrow, and in chemistry on Wednesday. On Thursday, winners will be announced of the Literature Prize, on Friday the Peace Prize, and on Monday, October 12, the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics, established by the Swedish State Bank in 1969.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional awards ceremony in Stockholm was canceled, as were the banquets. Instead, there will be a live broadcast from the town hall and online feeds with the laureates (they will be at their university or the Swedish embassy), during which they will be awarded diplomas and medals. This year, the amount of each Nobel Prize has been increased to 10 million Swedish kronor (about a million dollars).
