The father of the founder of Microsoft and famous philanthropist, William Gates senior, has died at the age of 94, Ria.ru reports.
“Yesterday my dad died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. We will miss him more than we can express right now. We are feeling grief, but also gratitude. My dad’s passing was not unexpected - he was 94 years old, and his health had been declining,”- Bill Gates wrote in a tribute.
Gates Jr. noted that he appreciated the quiet influence that his father had on virtually every aspect of his life, the legal assistance of Gates Sr. in the early years of Microsoft.
In an obituary the family credited the patriarch with a “deep commitment to social and economic equity,” noting that he was responsible for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s first efforts to improve global health as well as his advocacy for progressive taxation.
“My dad’s wisdom, generosity, empathy, and humility had a huge influence on people around the world,” Bill Gates wrote in a tribute.
As the New York Times notes, Alzheimer's disease became the cause of death of Gates Sr.
“My dad was the “real” Bill Gates. He was everything I try to be and I will miss him every day,” the Microsoft founder wrote on Twitter.
