Kazakhstanis can travel by intercity buses with an electronic ID

Kazakhstan has legalized the use of electronic identity cards in road transport, reports with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

According to the ministry, amendments have been made to the Rules for the transportation of passengers and luggage by road, which allow Kazakhstanis to use a digital identity card on a par with a paper identity card.

"In particular, when boarding buses on inter-district (intercity intraregional) routes, passengers will be able to present an identity card at their discretion - in the original or in the form of an electronic document through a digital document service (via a cell phone)," the message says.

It is also possible to purchase tickets with a digital identity card at bus stations, passenger service points, baggage claim when traveling on international, intercity, interregional, inter-district (intercity intraregional) routes.

In addition, taxi drivers will be able to use both paper and electronic IDs for pre-trip and post-trip medical examinations.

The above norms were adopted by order of the Minister of Industry and Infrastructure Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan (No. 524 dated October 4, 2021) on behalf of the Government of the country for the development of digital technologies and empowering citizens to exercise their rights without having to carry originals of identity cards with them.
