The option of canceling the Tokyo Summer Olympics and Paralympics still remains in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. This opinion was expressed on Thursday by Toshihiro Nikai, Secretary General of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Tass.ru reports.
"If it really becomes impossible, then it will have to be canceled," the Kyodo agency quoted him as saying.
Earlier on Thursday, the minister responsible for vaccination, Taro Kono, also said that the Olympic and Paralympic Games will probably have to be held without spectators.
The Tokyo Olympics were supposed to take place from July 24 to August 9, 2020. However, due to the pandemic, the competitions were postponed for a year and are scheduled for 23 July - 8 August 2021.
On March 20, the organizers finally decided to hold the Olympic Games without foreign fans. The issue of limiting the presence of Japanese spectators at sports venues will be considered at a later date.
