Senate will consider bills on elections

A meeting of the Bureau was held under the chairmanship of the Senate speaker, Maulen Ashimbayev that discussed the agenda of the upcoming session, scheduled May 20, 2021, Kazpravda.kz reports.
The draft Constitutional Law on Amendments to the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan On Elections has been included in the agenda of the upcoming meeting.
The bill is aimed at introducing direct elections of akims of cities of regional scale, villages, townships and rural districts. It lowers the threshold for the passage of political parties in elections. Now, to get seats in the deputy corps, parties need only to collect 5% of the votes. Also, a column "against all" will be entered in the ballots for elections of all levels.
Also, at the next session of the Senate, the draft law on amendments on Elections is to be examined.
The main objectives of the bill are to strengthen the local self-government system, enhance the local population’s activity in the exercise of their constitutional rights, the role and responsibility of political parties.
Senators will also consider amendments on the Republican Budget for 2021-2023.
