New natural reserve for saigas to be created in Kazakhstan

A new nature reserve for saigas is planned to be created in Kazakhstan, Kazpravda.kz refers to the press service of the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources informing.
Magzum Mirzagaliyev, the Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources visited West Kazakhstan region, where he met with scientists, ecologists and local residents to discuss migration of the Ural saigas.
"A task team has been formed of representatives of the ministries of ecology, agriculture, education and science, as well as international organizations and institutions.
West Kazakhstan region’s governor Gali Iskaliyev noted that the created task group will include representatives of local peasant farms, and all research and activities will be conducted openly.
It should be noted that West Kazakhstan is the region with the largest concentration of saigas in the country. According to the registration data of 2019, there were 217 000 saigas on the region’s territory. In 2020, due to the pandemic, no records were carried out. Until 2023, the use of saigas for purposes other than scientific is prohibited by law.
