RK President signed decree making Shymkent a city of republican significance

The President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarabayev has publicly signed the Decree "On some issues of administrative and territorial structure of the Republic of Kazakhstan," Kazprаvda.kz reports.
According to the press service of the Head of State, the President, speaking at the signing ceremony of the Decree, noted that Shymkent, along with Astana and Almaty, has become one of Kazakhstan's cities with a population of over one million people.
"In accordance with paragraph 1 of Article 3 of the Law "On administrative and territorial structure of the Republic of Kazakhstan," the decree assigns to Shymkent the status of a city of republican significance. This administrative unit will be the seventeenth region of our country. The regional center is the city of Turkestan, which for centuries was the heart of political and spiritual life of the Kazakh Khanate and the entire Turkic world," said the President of Kazakhstan.
Nursultan Nazarbayev stressed that the newly formed Turkestan region has all the opportunities for the qualitative implementation of new administrative functions, and noted the important historical significance of the decision.
The President of Kazakhstan expressed his confidence that Shymkent's republican status will contribute to its further successful advancement and will open new unique prospects for the city.
At the end of the signing ceremony, the Head of State gave specific instructions to the Presidential Administration, the Government and the regional administration on the high-quality and efficient implementation of the Decree and smooth and efficient operation of local state bodies and organizations.
