Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev laid flowers to the monument of victims of political repression in Akmol village of Akmola region, Kazpravda.kz correspondent reports.

"May 31 we pay tribute to the memory of the victims of political repressions. The Kazakh intelligentsia, the entire leadership of the republic was killed. They were tortured in 11 concentration camps throughout Kazakhstan. There were more than one million people serving their sentence," - the Head of State recalled.
The President noted that Kazakhstan has become a common home for all people affected by the Stalin regime.
"1.5 million people from the North Caucasus, Korea, the Baltic States, Ukraine, Russia were deported to Kazakhstan from various parts of the Soviet Union, thus, our country became multinational. For all the repressed, Kazakhstan became a home and we welcomed all of them. Since then, to this day, we live as a single nation - Kazakhstanis. Therefore, our people must remember these terrible events, our future generation must know about it in order to prevent such horrors," – the President said.
Nursultan Nazarbayev also stressed that in addition to the repressed politicians, their wives and children were persecuted.
The solemn ceremony of laying flowers was also attended by the descendants of the camp prisoners.
