Afghanistan's plight must be in the focus of global attention - Tokayev

At the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the CIS, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev urged to improve the confrontation to external threats and pay attention of the world community to the problems of Afghanistan, reports.

"Modern realities require improving the mechanisms of CIS cooperation in the field of security. The main contours of our interaction in this area are outlined in the concept of military cooperation, as well as in the program to strengthen border security on the external border until 2025. At the same time, special emphasis should be placed in the work being done on issues of joint confrontation with the increased challenges of terrorism, religious extremism, drug trafficking," the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan said.

According to him, these threats have become of paramount importance in light of the current situation in Afghanistan.

"Kazakhstan shares the UN position. The dire humanitarian situation in this country should be in the focus of attention of the entire international community. Whatever our political views or personal convictions are, we should not leave Afghanistan alone with unprecedented difficulties. Humanitarian aid to the Afghan people is a practical contribution to this cause," Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.

He noted that Kazakhstan has already started supplying food and essential goods to Afghanistan.

"In order to systematize this work, we propose to establish a logistics HUB to provide international humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan. Obviously, after overcoming the acute phase of the crisis, Afghanistan will need further systemic support from the UN institute. This important task is supported by the initiative to create a UN regional center in Almaty. We hope for the assistance of the countries of the commonwealth in the implementation of these plans," the Head of State concluded.
