Mirzagaliyev proposed to develop a digital map of the SCO for preservation of rare animals

Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan Magzum Mirzagaliyev took part in the meeting of heads of ministries and departments of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states responsible for environmental protection, Kazpravda.kz reports with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Ecology of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
During the meeting, the heads of the environmental departments of the SCO countries discussed the state and prospects for the development of cooperation in the field of environmental protection. In his speech, the minister noted the need to fulfill the instructions of the heads of state voiced during the SCO Summit in 2020, and for this purpose proposed to develop a Register of environmental problems of the SCO member states.
M. Mirzagaliyev also touched upon the issues of a comprehensive solution to the environmental problems of the Aral region, noted the need to search for joint solutions on climate change, the development of specially protected natural areas and the preservation of biodiversity in the SCO countries. In this regard, the minister proposed to develop a program for phyto-forestry reclamation of the drained bottom of the Aral Sea, a program of cooperation between the SCO member states in the development of specially protected natural areas, as well as to develop an "Ecosystem digital map of the SCO" in order to preserve rare animals.
In addition, the Kazakh side announced a number of initiatives to enhance activities to attract international donor assistance through UN programs to finance projects in the field of environmental protection. To improve the efficiency of environmental protection activities within the SCO, the minister proposed to develop an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation between the SCO member states in the field of environmental protection.
At the same time, at the initiative of the Kazakh side, within the framework of the meeting, a Joint Working Group of the SCO member states on environmental protection issues was established.
Following the meeting, the parties approved the Action Plan for implementation of the Concept of Cooperation of the SCO Member States in the Field of Environmental Protection for 2022-2024 and signed the minutes of the meeting.
