The research and restoration laboratory "Island of Crimea" has begun work to save the door of the gurkhana (burial vault) from the mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yassaui. This is a double-leaf solid wood door with intricate minute carvings and inlay, Kazpravda.kz reports.
“The door of the gurkhana is the only genuine door of the 14th century in its place. The unique carved door decor, made in the best traditions of the woodcarving art of the Timurid era, may be lost to future generations. Over the course of more than 600 years of operation, wood and carvings have received deformations, various damage, dirt, and significant losses.
Having started researching the object back in 2018, we finally started its conservation and restoration. There is a lot of work ahead, but we believe that the efforts will be justified,” the laboratory's Instagram account says.
